How to setup BitPim on the V3C / V3M Razr

BitPim can be used for a large variety of reasons. One of the usual fav's is being able to download all those pictures and videos you took, as well as the audio recordings (or almost any file for that matter!). It's primary use is for exploring the filesystem, as certain hacks will require that you manually upload a file to a certain area that is not available from the main options. This can be accomplished by first making the filesystem option appear, by going to View > View Filesystem. This will be repeated again in the guide just to make sure you've got it ready for future hacks.

PLEASE NOTE:
o PST or MSU are NOT required to use BitPim.
o Please make sure that you have closed PST/MSU and re-plugged your phone before switching phone software.
o BitPim cannot add new files to the phone. Meaning, that you can overwrite files that are already on your phone.
But you cannot write new files to your phone with BitPim (you can use PST or MSU + p2k commander to add new files).
o At times when doing this setup process your computer might freeze after clicking a button.
Just ride it out, it will come back from being frozen and you'll be able to continue with the setup.

For this guide we will be using:
* Motorola Razr V3C / V3M for Verizon
* Latest Motorola Drivers (Setup USB)
* BitPim 0.9.13 (Download )

How to setup BitPim

    1. Plug your phone into your computer with the USB cable. If you were previously using another program, make sure to unplug and reconnect your phone to your computer before attempting to connect to your phone with a different program. Make sure to close all other programs that connect to your phone. Bitpim does not need PST or MSU running in the background.

    2. Open up Bitpim. It can be downloaded here: (Download)

    3. If this is your first time using BitPim, you will probably see this window that says that there was no phone detected/recognized. Go ahead and click [ Yes ] to open the settings window

If you do not see the above pop up when you started BitPim, then click on the Settings button, which looks like this:

    4. The following window should come up on your screen. The blanks “Phone Type” and “Com Port” may be filled in with something, but those are what we are going to change.

    5. Click the “Browse…” button next to “Com Port.” You should see a page that looks like this:

Aside from “Motorola USB Modem” you won’t have the same ports on your computer, but the important thing to note is where the “Motorola USB Modem” is appearing. If it is under “Available Ports” then you can choose it and click OK, if it’s under unavailable ports try unplugging and reconnecting your phone. That should make it become available. Clicking OK takes you back to the Settings menu.

    6. From the Settings menu, click on “Phone Wizard…” next to “Phone Type.” This will take you to the following window.

    7. Choose your Carrier first, then Manufacture, and lastly your phone. Even if you don’t have Verizon, choose Verizon Wireless on the left, then Motorola, and lastly “v3cm” as your phone model, as shown below. Then click Next.

    8. You should now be at a page titled Communication Port Settings, as shown below. Clicking on each COM port individually will show you what it is on the right. These are the same COM ports that were shown in Step 5 when you were selecting Motorola USB Model under ports. If you remember which port it was you can click right on it. If not you can scroll through all the choices until the page looks like the screen shot below, and the Port Detail has information about your Motorola USB Modem. Once the correct COM port is highlighted click Next.

    9. The last page should be titled Summary, and have a button that says, “Detect Phone.” You don’t need to do that, however if you do, it will say Failed, which is OK. Either way, click on Finish. .

    10. You’ll be taken back to the Settings menu, and those blanks are now filled in with the correct information. Click OK.

    11. Ignore all the handy looking options on the left like “Phonebook,” “Media,” etc. Those won’t work with CDMA phones. Go to View/View Filesystem and an option will be added at the end of the list of choices on the left that is a picture of a file cabinet and is called “Filesystem.” Clicking on it will show you a folder in the next space over, with a + next to it.

NOTE: If there is no plus to click (for example, if it’s a minus and clicking on it does not show you the file system, close and reopen Bitpim. All the setting stuff you just did will remain with a restart, and the file system icon will still be showing when it opens back up.)

Click on the + to show the contents of the folder. The bar at the bottom should look like below

    12. Tada! You can now browse through your file tree. Note that Bitpim is only useful for overwriting or deleting files, but not adding new files. You can also use it to copy pictures you’ve taken with your phone onto your computer. For adding files, try using p2kcommander, which you can download here:

How to setup Mobile Phone Tools with a Verizon v3c / v3m Razr

Mobile Phone Tools, otherwise known as MPT, can be used to upload your own ringtones, pictures, and videos to your Verizon v3c / v3m Razr -- free of charge. These phones come stock from Verizon with this feature blocked, probably for the potential profits that can be made with this feature not available. However, with a relatively simple modification to the phones programming, we can unblock this feature so that we may upload our own content to our phone, for free.

Used in this guide:
    * Mobile Phone Tools - Version 3.20f [purchase it with a usb cable] -->
    * Standard USB cable [PICTURE]
    * Required seem edit: "Enable USB Transfers" [GUIDE] [SEEM EDITS]
    * Razr V3C / V3M from Verizon

!!! A SEEM EDIT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE MPT WORK !!!
You need to modify the programming of the phone first, by performing a seem edit.

6. If it comes back to this window:
then click no

7. Then it will load a default phone, and attempt to initialize

8. This default profile will probably not work with the V3C, so Click the Menu button then goto Setup then click General Setup

10. It then takes you to the Device configuration wizard where you then click next

11. Click on Motorola USB Modem to highlight it and then press Next

14. Then you reach Model Selection where, this time around, you're going to select Motorola CDMA and then on the right select Motorola - CDMA Generic and then click next

15. Device configuration is completed so then click next

16. Then you get back to the general setup window, where you click OK -- after this, it will take you back to the same phone, however this time it should actually work and connect after about 10-15 seconds. You can tell it worked by the appearance of Verizon (US)

17. Next, you want to do steps 14-22 all over again by:
clicking Menu > Setup > General Setup
    clicking onto the Communication tab
    clicking Change Modem
    clicking next
selecting motorola usb modem and click next
wait for phone to talk and then click next
NOW THE NEXT STEP IS WHERE ITS DIFFERENT

18. In the Model Selection window highlight Motorola GSM and then on the right panel highlight Motorola - V3 and then click next

19. Next it should goto Device configuration complete so then click finish and back at the General Setup window click OK

Then watch happily as finally, all the hard work has paid off and we've got the Motorola Razr V3C for Verizon to work with MPT V3.20f

Dont forget that in order to actually use most of the functions
you have to press the <> icon above the red power off button

How to use BitPim to add a ringtone to your v3m/v3c phone. w/ walk through video

First things first

This method can NOT be used on a newer firmware verizon razr v3m phone (ex. 24.1_01.19.xx). These newer firmwares have the ringtones stored in an alternate location than where the application is designed to put the ringtones at. Furthermore, you will want to use the v3cm module only when doing this method.

The Method

  1. connect the phone to the computer
  2. start bitpim
  3. expand the "media" section in the tree structure on the left
  4. click on the "ringer" item that now appears
  5. click on the "add ringer button" (musical note with a plus sign).
  6. Select your file and click ok
  7. A converter application will open which you can use to trim the file down to proper length (30 seconds)
  8. Convert and clip your file, choosing the portion you want to use and click "ok"
  9. the file will now appear in the right side window
  10. click the "send phone data" button (arrow pointing towards the phone)
  11. put a check mark next to "ringtone" and select the option to "add"
  12. click okay
  13. the phone will now read the ringer database and update it accordingly.
  14. next, the phone will transfer your ringer to the phone
  15. you now have a new ringtone on your phone.

Notes

To bypass the audio converter, simply hold the "Shift" button on the keyboard while you click the "add ringer" button (Shift+click). This way you do not have to convert a file that is already ready to use. There is no need to delete the mytonedb.db file when doing this method, nor do you need to powercycle the phone. Simply disconnect the phone from the computer and look at your ringer list... you will now see the file in the list and you are able to select it as a ringtone.

PST 7.2.3: Backing up your phone book

Ever thought for a couple minutes that you've lost your phone and found yourself thinking about all those numbers you're gonna lose? Yeah. Us too. 2. (assuming you've installed PST) Click start and then goto All Programs and find Motorola PST and then click on Phone Programmer to start the interface

    3. You will hear a series of USB chimes. After they stop goto File > New and then a window will pop up with icons - Click Phone Book File and then go ahead and click OK

    4. Now we're ready to grab that phone book from your Razr. The phone drop down should have appeared, click Phone > Read
    5. It will now establish a connection with your phone. Then followed by a retrieval of the Motorola Device Interface. All non-sense you dont really need to know. Eventually it will read the Phone book from you phone and show you a progress bar. This whole process may take a few minutes.

    6. 100% = The phone book is ready for harvest. Your contacts have been plucked from your phone and entered into a window behind this progress window. It is now safe to disconnect the phone. Press the X in the top right of this window to get rid of it.

    7. You'll find yourself at a list of your contacts in a more raw form. This method may cause entires with multiple numbers associated to the same name (IE: Mom > home > cell >etc.) to become seperate entries. Hey, atleast you have a backup.

    8. Goto File > Save. Now save this .phb somewhere you'll easily remember, like the My Documents folder. Also name it something you'll remember like "Phone Book - 05/22/06.phb"

PST 7.2.3: Restoring a Phone Book Backup

So you've lost your phone, changed your firmware, or otherwise huh? Well arnt you glad you made a backup of your phone book now eh. Dont worry, its simple. But just a warning: For contacts that had more then 1 number per name, you may get individual contacts for each number. As in Mom = Home + Cell would now equal Mom = Home and Mom = Cell as two seperate entries. Atleast you have> the number.

For this guide we will be using:
* Motorola Razr V3C for Verizon
* Mini USB cable
* PST 7.2.3 - Phone Programmer [download unavailable]

Goto Phone > Write and then it will begin to restore your phone book backup.

    5. It will now establish a connection with your phone. Eventually it will write the Phone book to your phone and show you a progress bar. This whole process may take a few minutes.

    6. 100% = The phone book has been restored. Your contacts have been restored to your phone and you should now have a full phone book. It is now safe to disconnect the phone. Press the X in the top right of this window to get rid of it.

    7. All done. Now you can close PST and consider this a job well done. Pat yourself on the back, you prevented yourself from losing your life saving of cell phone contacts! Now, dont let it happen again! Just kidding.

RSD CDMA General, an alternative to PST and/or MSU

In this guide I will have you install RSD CDMA General instead of MSU or PST. RSD General will be as nice as MSU and do most everything that PST does, but it does it better. This guide assumes you've already got the USB Drivers for your phone installed and working. Do NOT plug your phone in until told to do so later in this guide.

First, you may aquire RSD CDMA General version 5.1.6 here. After clicking on that link download it to a location on your PC where you will remember where you put it. Then double click on the file and then click the "Install" button. All this action will do is extract the .msi file. Then double click on the RSD_CDMA_General_5.1.6_Installation.msi file and the program will install. The MOST important thing to note is that either during the install or the first run of this program, if your firewall program asks whether or not to 'block' it, click the "Block" button.

Now, go ahead and fire this bad boy up. In the main window, it will ask you to "please power up your phone and plug it in" and the lower window will say, "Failed to parse matrix file, Please contact your system administrator". Don't worry about that message, it is NORMAL with this software. Go ahead and plug your phone in now.

After plugging your phone in, your comp and phone should 'beep' a few times and additional software should automatically be installed (unless you've already used PST). Just like MSU (if you've used MSU), your cursor should change to a little phone and then your ESN and f/w version should be shown in the upper window. In the main window you will see a message in red saying, "If you are upgrading your software or doing a swap operation, this phone is not supported. You may however continue to use the phone provisioning menu", and under it in black a "Please disconnect this phone" message. This is TOTALLY NORMAL! Congrats, you have RSD CDMA General set-up and working properly.

Finally, I post this guide because I had so much trouble with PST which in my book stands for Piece of Shite and Troublesome. RSD General can be used in place of PST/MSU to put your phone in the proper mode for using P2KSeem, P2K Commander; it can be used to backup your phonebook and if you have a 'flashable' phone, it will do all the backups/restores more reliably than PST if you chose to flash.

Simple Guided Walk-Through for V3M/V3C in P2K for Ringtones, Pics, Videos.

I'm only putting this here because that’s what the page states for me to do.

This is a simple very guided walk-through on getting you're Verizon V3C/V3M and any other phone that is compatible setup and properly connected.

First off you are going to pick yourself up a mini USB to standard USB 2.0 cable and then you are going to want to download 2 programs before you start.

1. P2K Commander. (Save it to a familiar location in your computer.)
2. Motorola Software Updater. (Also save to a good location.)

BOTH OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE FREE TO D/L. THEY ARE LOCATED IN THE SOFTWARE SECTION WHICH IS LINKED AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE.

Next. Make sure you’re phone has a good charge. If you’re phone mistakenly gets unplugged or shuts off while transferring files it could result in having your phone's software corrupted.

Okay, now that we have the necessary hardware/software we are ready to start.

Go ahead and double click on the file named MSU (Motorola Software Updater)
If it prompts to unzip the files just click unzip files here, but it should automatically do this on its own and bring you to the install screen.

At the main screen we are going to click "NEXT" click next again Click "Agree" now click next to confirm you're install. Now the "Launch MSU Software update" should be checked already. Click CLOSE.

Now on you're computer windows may have a prompt that comes up asking to block or unblock this software, make sure you click unblock. Or you won’t be able to get in.

OK now MSU should be opened up and ready to search for your phone.

Lets go ahead and plug you're USB cable in to a desired USB port on the back of your computer. NOTE. Try and keep this cable in for now on, and continue to try and use the same USB port for every file transfer for now on.

Ok after you plug you're phone in, don’t be alarmed you're phone and computer may beep a few times. You should get a couple popups on the bottom saying it found new hardware and is installing. This is GOOD! DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING UNTIL THIS HAS COMPLETLY FINISHED. MSU should automatically detect and come back on screen for you to see you're MEID number. If it says N/A for MODEL NUMBER AND OPERATOR NUMBER it is ok, that’s fine and it doesn’t need it.

Ok now let’s go ahead and close any running applications such as AOL, games, any programs that are running. CLOSE now!

Now we are going to find where you saved P2K Commander. Open the File up and click on the icon that looks like a Yellow Star that says P2K Commander, a security warning may pop up asking you what you want to do. Click RUN.

Now another box will come up after the program loaded. It will be a "Noob Reminder" which is say "Selected Partition is :a" and "This can be modified in the options dialogue" which after you get more familiar with the software you can change it around and have it not pop up anymore. For now just click OK.

Now this software uses a file standard file transfer system which goes LEFT to RIGHT. So whatever you want to transfer is going to come from the left hand column and go into the right hand column where you're phone settings will be.

You will notice on the left hand side on the bottom there is a little history box of what is going on and what has been done so far. YOU may get stuff in there that says "GENERIC FAILURE, AND VOLUME NAME FAILURE" THIS IS NORMAL!!

Next the left hand column is going to be used to find you're files that you want to be transferred.

The right hand column we are going to click on the topmost part of the program where there is a little dropdown arrow next to where it says "REREAD"
Now click P2K Mobile Phone. Now this program will be loading all you're phone files. Give it a few seconds you can watch the progress of it on the bottom where the blank bar should be filling up with little green bars.

Now that everything is loaded and connected properly we can start by loading ringtones.

First find a ringtone of you're choice from the MEDIA section on the top of hacktherazr.com

Download the ringtone to an easy location, I suggest making a folder in C: named ringtones, makes it easier for P2K and yourself to navigate.

Next go back and open up P2K, move over to the right hand side column and open up P2K Mobile phone from the dropdown arrow next to the "reread" button, as explained previously.

Underneath where is says filename there will be a folder called "a" double click that. Double click Motorola, double click shared, double click ringtone, you should see a list of all you're factory ringtones DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING OUT OF HERE. I WILL EXPLAIN THIS IN A MINUTE...

Ok now that you have the directory opened up for you're phone to receive mp3's, we will now move over to the left hand column.

Go up to where it says "reread" again on the left-hand side, and click the dropdown button CLICK C:\, now you should have a list of files that are showed when you click C: from you're computer itself.

OK... Now we can find the folder that you named "Ringtones" or whatever you called it. Double Click that folder. Now you should see the file that you have downloaded from this wonderful website.

Click ONCE! On the ringtone file. Now move you're cursor down to the bottom right and click "COPY", Wait until the progress bar on the bottom has completely finished before doing anything else. Once it’s done it will be a full line of green bars.

Now make sure you see you're file in the right hand column where you're phone files are located. If it’s in there GREAT! If not repeat the process.

Now before we do anything else we have to delete a file named MYToneDB.db

To find this file follow me... Double the icon that looks like a little hard drive, it is located exactly under the tab named Filename. Like I said it will look like a little hard drive of some sort with 2 little dots next to it and the file size will say

It should be the first file on the list. Now let’s double click that, double click it again, and double click it again, now we should be back to our main files directory. Scroll down and find the file named MyToneDB.db, click that file once to highlight it, and then click DELETE. This file has to be deleted upon system restart for you're new ringtones to be recreated and useable. Don’t worry this file does come back upon restart. DELETING THIS FILE IS ONLY APPLICABLE FOR INSTALLING RINGTONES; YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DELETE THIS FOR WALLPAPER OR VIDEOS.

NOW after you have deleted that file, click on Restart. Watch you outside LCD to come back to normal, and wait for any beeps to stop that may be coming from you're phone or the computer which in this case it is reconnected itself to MSU AND P2K. At this point I like to exit out of P2K and then MSU, unplug the phone sometimes it likes to restart itself on its own again after all of this, if so don’t be alarmed this is fine, Wait until it comes back and has loaded fully.

Go ahead and check to see if you're ringtone(s) are available.

Now for deleting, I RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING OUT OF YOUR PHONE.
But if you are running out of space !!!!!MAKE 110% SURE THAT ANY RINGTONES OR WALLPAPERS YOU ARE GOING TO DELETE, MAKE SURE SURE SURE SURE THAT THEY ARE NOT BEING USED BY ANYTHING IN YOUR PHONE, MAKE 200% THAT THEY ARE NOT SET AS ANY RINGER OR WALLPAPER FOR ANYTHING, IF YOU DELETE SOMETHING THAT IS BEING USED BY THE PHONE AT THE TIME OF DELETING, IT COULD LOCK YOU'RE PHONE UP AND YOU WILL HAVE A PAPERWEIGHT.

UPLOADING PICTURES...............

Now for uploading Pictures follow the same exact steps as above to get you're phone connected and setup in P2K, but instead of clicking on Ringtones, double click on the folder named "Picture" and at this time you can go ahead and make another folder in your C:\ named "Razr Pics" or whatever it is you like. Download one of the many wonderful pics we have made for you guys to download in the MEDIA section under wallpapers, click you're applicable phone type.

Save it to the folder you have just created

Go back into P2K commander, find it... copy it like we did with the ringtones, be sure you have it set to go into you're pictures and you didn’t mistakenly click ringtones again. Go ahead and copy it and that’s it, it’s not necessary but I recommend restarting you're phone using P2K or unplugging it and manually restarting it. Go in and play with you're new wallpaper!

Uploading Videos.............

Exactly the same as pictures, but make a new file in C:\ named videos, you can find videos in hacktherazr.com under media, THE ONLY TYPE OF VIDEOS ALLOWED IN OUR PHONES ARE 3gp, .3g2, and .mp4. Do exactly the same thing as stated before for setup and transfer. NO DELETING OF ANY FILES IS NEEDED FOR THIS EITHER.
