Advanced Skin File Editing

HOW TO SKIN THE MOTOROLA RAZR V3M

Update

Due to recent reports, I felt that it is pertinent to explain that this hack is really only useful on the older firmwares such as NEWC_01.09.02 (mine). If you are unsure what firmware version you have, please check the FAQ section.

An in-depth look at skinning the Razr from Verizon Wireless. Traditionally the problem is that Verizon has made its own Firmware (in computer terms, operating system) and changing your phones theme or skin was not intended. This guide helps you learn how to skin the Motorola Razr V3M from Verizon Wireless and other carriers that do not have the stock Motorola firmware.

WHAT IS NEEDED:

Setting Up skinner4moto:

  1. Extract the skinner4moto archive to C:/Program Files
  2. Extract the module archive to the directory created during step 1.
  3. Double click the skinner4moto icon to install
  4. if necessary double click the module icon to install
  5. make a shortcut on the desktop for ease of access

Enabling file transfers with QPST

The following seem needs to be edited with p2k seem editor:
Enable QPST File Transfer WORKS
2742 Bytes: 0000 Offset: 5a Check Bit 7
Allows you to transfer files using the QPST EFS explorer.
View the seem edit overview if you are unfamiliar with this process.

Connecting With QPST and using its file system explorer:

(do not have MSU or PST running with this application - it does everything for you)

  1. Connect the phone to the PC with the mini USB cable
  2. Open the QPST configuration utility
  3. Make sure you are on the "Ports" tab
  4. Ensure that the ports are enabled by clicking the "Enable" button
  5. If after waiting a bit, it still says "no phone", click the "Add New Port" button
  6. Choose port(s) from the list on the left, click OK
  7. Momentarily, the phone should be recognized and appear as "SURF6500-ZRF6500"
  8. Click on the "Start Clients" menu
  9. Choose "EFS EXPLORER"
  10. Make sure the SPC field is set to 000000
  11. Click OK and let it connect - leave the configuration utility running

Acquiring the skin files:

( I will use the blue skin as an example)

  1. Navigate to /mobile/skins/blue
  2. Click in the right side window and press Ctrl+A (select all)
  3. Drag the files onto the desktop (or into a folder)
  4. MAKE A BACK UP COPY OF ALL FILES NOW!!

Editing the skin:

Assuming everything is done correctly to this point, you should be able to double click the blue.ski file to open it in skinner4moto.

  1. Open the skin by double clicking the .ski icon or by opening skinner4moto and use its open feature The first (and easiest to figure out) thing you will want to do is change the images! I used GIMP for this step. When the skin file is opened, a folder called "gifs" will be created with thousands of images. Most of them are changeable on the original Moto UI only, but there are some that we can change (I will list them at the end)
  2. go ahead and minimize skinner4moto and navigate to the folder where your working skin files are and open the gifs folder. (don't close it - it will erase the gifs)
  3. open the gif that you want to edit (right click and choose EDIT WITH or OPEN WITH)
  4. edit the image and save the file back with out changing the name
  5. repeat this process with every image you want to change

Now we're going to change some of those screen and font colors!! This part is done through the skinner4moto interface.

  6. restore the skinner4moto window
  7. Click the radio button for "Colors" (right in the middle of the window)
  8. Locate the item you wish to change the color for and click in that row (again, I will list these at the end)
  9. Ignore the color list on the left side
  10. click the colored box next to the word "Color" (again, ignore the one on the left side)
  11. choose a predefined color (or create a custom color to add to the custom color pallete, and select it)
  12. click OK
  13. repeat this process for every color you wish to change

Now it is time to save the new skin!!

  14. Click the save button on the left side of the window (if you get an error message, just click it again.

Applying the skin

  1. reconnect to the phone with QPST
  2. navigate back to /mobile/skins/blue
  3. right click each file (one at a time) and select "New -> File"
  4. choose the source file from your hard drive - leave everything at the defaults
  5. Click OK
  6. do this for each file created - blue.ski, blue.dat, and blue1.dat
  7. close the EFS explorer - it will ask you if you want to reset the phone, accept this prompt
  8. Close the configuration utility
Enjoy your new skin!!

LIST OF CHANGES I'VE
BEEN ABLE TO MAKE

Note: in addition to what I have outlined here, there is more that I have not experimented with yet. It is possible I know to change the position of the Volume window (setting) font. I have not tried moving other things yet. There is also a boolean engine which can be used to change whether a feature is on or off, such as font outlines. For each font color change I listed, there are two outline colors. The outline feature would have to be turned on with the boolean engine. I've not tried it yet, but I imagine it would work.

*make sure that you are viewing the proper theme/skin before you start thinking it didn't work!

Change Carrier Banner

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

So maybe you enjoy sporting "Verizon Wireless" on the inside and outside of your phone, but maybe you dont. Noticed how you cant change it from within the phone? Yeah. You can add another line of text but, nehhh... you really want to unbrand that phone dont you. After all, it is your phone - make it so.

Used in this guide:
* Motorola Razr V3M / V3C for Verizon
* P2K Seem Editer [GUIDE] [DOWNLOAD]
* PST 7.2.3 - Phone Programmer

Change that Carrier Banner!
    1. Plug in your phone to your computer via the USB cable and then start Phone Programmer which comes with PST 7.2.3 (available from most P2P file sharing programs). This guide also assumes that you have previously setup PST and gone through the initial setup process.

    2. Start P2K Seem Editer [DOWNLOAD]

We are about to perform a seem edit.
If you do not know how to perform a seem edit, please visit this guide

    3. Basically this text, "Verizon Wireless" is embedded in the phones programming and you can edit this string of text from the seem editer. The maximum amount of characters that you can put is 16 characters. Lets start by by loading up the proper seem and locating the text we will be changing. Use the following seem information:

    Change Carrier Banner WORKS
    296a Bytes: 24 Record: 0005
Allows you to change "Verizon Wireless" or otherwise to something of your liking. Make sure to take note of the different seem, bytes, and record.

    4. You will notice that on the right side of P2K Seem Editer that there is Verizon Wireless written on 2 lines. You've located the proper place, and we're about to change that bad girl. First, we must warn you to NOT change anything before the V of Verizon OR after the S of wirelesS.

    5. Now, simply click on the V of Verizon and you can begin to type in the new carrier banner. Remember that you cannot go past the S of wirelesS. A good method of aligning your new text (in the center) is in the next step.

    6. Considering that allowed amount of characters is 16 that means that if your new text is really short, and you want to center that text, that you need to figure out how many spaces will be in your new banner.

Figure out what you want to put in place of Verizon Wireless and count the amount of characters (spaces count as a character). For our example, we will be using "Hack the Razr" which is 13 characters. We have an uneven amount of characters, which means that our banner will either be 1 character to the left or 1 character to the right

Take the amount of characters and subtract it from 16. For our example that would leave us with 3. So that means we need to put 1 space before the H of Hack and then 2 spaces after the R of razR. Pressing the space bar is fine (for spaces in the banner as well).

Get it? If not, it should look like this:
      _Hack_the_Razr__

    7. After you fix it to your liking, you're pretty much set after we save the changes. Go ahead and click the Save to Phone button to save the changes you just made.

    8. Last step is to restart your phone. You can either click the Restart Phone button on the P2K Seem Editer program or you can just turn your phone off then back on.

Yee haw. You've now unbranded your phone and customized that text to make it your own. Enjoy.

Change Outside LCD image

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

Sick and tired of seeing that fugly Verizon advertisement on the outside of your phone when its open? Well ok, you might not see it, but other people do - and whats sweeter then customizing it to your own likeness? Yeah I know I know, get on with it! Good news is its pretty easy (with the proper setup) and you can create your own images as long as you have them set to the proper size.

Used in this guide:
* Motorola Razr V3M / V3C for Verizon
* P2K Commander [DOWNLOAD]
* PST 7.2.3 - Phone Programmer

Change outside LCD Image
    1. Plug in your phone to your computer via the USB cable and then start Phone Programmer which comes with PST 7.2.3 (available from most P2P file sharing programs). This guide also assumes that you have previously setup PST and gone through the initial setup process.

    3. There should be a left and a right window pane (both physical sides of the program look the same). There is a drop down menu on both sides that display C:\ and then have a button that says [Re-Read]. Choose the side you wish to explore your Razr on by clicking the drop down menu and clicking on "P2K Mobile Phone"

If it starts to do something and reads in the bottom left corner:

Usb p2k device found, phone connected !
      GENERIC FAILURE.     thats normal
Volume name fail!     thats normal as well

Then the progress bar should start growing and the bottom left should start to display all the files (names) as the filesystem is downloaded. Success, go onto the next step. If you had problems, continue reading.

If it snaps back to C:\ and the bottom left window reads

No p2k device found, NOT connected!
      USB: IO Time-out!
      CMD: Data write fail!
      Volume Name fail!

yeah that means it failed for some reason. Simply close P2k Commander and Phone Programmer, unplug your phone and give it a couple seconds... plug your phone back in and do the same process.

    4. If you have verizon, the window pane that you chose should have a folder that reads "a".

    5. double click on the folder "a" and then double click the folder labeled "mobile"

    6. You should now be located in the directory P2k:/a/mobile/ -- if you have verizon, you will see verizon.gif.

Whatever you do, DO NOT DELETE the original verizon.gif from your phone.

    8. On the other window pane (where your phones files are not located) go ahead and locate the image that you would like to replace your original outside LCD image with.

If you saved the new verizon.gif image to c:\razr\ then simply type that into the address located that is directly above "Filename" and then press enter

If you saved it somewhere else then you need to locate it by double clicking the folder at the top of the list that says ".." -- this is another term for "go up a directory". Continue to double click it until you figure out where you are, and then locate that verizon.gif

    9. Alright! Now we're ready to transfer that new outside LCD image, arnt you excited?! Once you have located the new verizon.gif image on your own computer, click on it (to select it) and simply Press the [Copy] button located in the bottom right hand corner of the program

    10. Success! The bottom left information screen should now say Uploading Left to Right: verizon.gif -- which means its about to be done.. give it a couple seconds, and then open your phone and look at that bad ass new LCD image.

Change startup / shutdown animations

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

Tired of watching that Verizon or Motorola animation when you turn on or turn off your phone? No?! Ok well then do you just feel like changing those animations? Its easy and doesnt affect anything in a negative way at all. Meh, theres not much to describe about this one :)

Used in this guide:
* Motorola Razr V3M / V3C for Verizon
* P2K Commander [DOWNLOAD]
* PST 7.2.3 - Phone Programmer

Change startup / shutdown animations

Volume Name fail!

yeah that means it failed for some reason. Simply close P2k Commander and Phone Programmer, unplug your phone and give it a couple seconds... plug your phone back in and do the same process.

    4. If you have verizon, the animations will be located in /a/motorola/shared/picture

    5. Locate the animations which are labeled as customer_opening.gif for the startup animation and customer_closing.gif" for the shutdown animation.

    6. Now you need to choose a replacement and prepare the image to replace your current startup / shutdown animation. If you are creating your own custom animation, make sure that the image is 176x220 (176 width x 220 height) and that you save it in the gif format. If you do not use a gif image with this exact size, it will not work. Also note that animations larger then 320k appear to not function for the opening / closing.

A link to a crapload more

MAKE SURE THAT YOU SAVE THIS FILE AS customer_opening.gif OR customer_closing.gif

It is required that you name the new image customer_opening.gif (for the startup animation) or name it customer_closing.gif (for the shutdown animation) so that the filename is the exact same as image currently on your phone. We recommend that you create a new folder on your computer such as c:\razr\ and place the image in there (it makes the next step alot easier)

    8. On the other window pane (where your phones files are not located) go ahead and locate the image that you would like to replace your original startup or shutdown animation with.

If you saved the new customer_opening.gif or customer_closing.gif image to c:\razr\ then simply type that into the address located that is directly above "Filename" and then press enter

Once you have located the new customer_opening.gif or customer_closing.gif image on your own computer, click on it (to select it) and simply Press the [Copy] button located in the bottom right hand corner of the program

    10. Success! The bottom left information screen should now say Uploading Left to Right: customer_opening.gif -- which means its about to be done.. give it a couple seconds, and then turn off and/or on your phone to see your bad ass new animations.

Change the menu theme

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

Razr's such as the V3 from Cingular and other carriers usually come with a User Interface that was designed to be skinned. However, the Verizon Razr's came with a User Interface that was not designed to be skinned. This guide will teach you how to compile and upload your own custom skins for the v3c and v3m Razr for Verizon.

This has all been made possible by
Ry Ry and Daniel W. aka space.

skins to your phone, skip to step 3

Images contained within .bar files:
mainmenu_htr.bar = Main Menu backgrounds and top icon backgrounds when selected and unselected
htr_bgtitle.bar = Background of menu title (in between main background and top icons)

Specifications for new custom skin images:
  • BMP format only
  • 24 bit
  • Size: ( width x height )
    • Main Background = 176 x 146
    • Top Icon Backgrounds = 36 x 33
    • Title Background = 176 x 24

To compile a custom skin we will be using:
* BREW Resource Editor 3.0.4.7 [DOWNLOAD]
* A guide skin: guide.mainmenu.bar // guide.bgtitle.bar

How to compile your custom skin

    STEP 1: REPLACING OLD IMAGES

    1. Startup BREW Resource Editor and then goto File > Open or press ctrl+o and then locate guide.mainmenu.bar and click ok

    2. Double click Objects and it will then list all of entries in the .bar which are essentially each individual image.

    3. Single click Hex 5001 IDI_OBJECT_5001 and you will notice the right window change to load that entries information. You will see Source     Hex located below Attributes

    4. Double click Hex which will activate a drop down menu and then select File. Below Source there should be Data

    5. All set? Click Apply in the bottom right, or the changes you just made will not take effect.

    6. Single click the empty white box to the right of Data, below File. It will then turn into an text input box with a [...] icon to the right of it.

    7. Single click [...] and it will open a window where you need to select the image that you would like to replace the current image with.

Tip: If you need to locate the image by actually seeing it, like a preview, right mouse click inside the window and then goto View > Thumbnails

    8. Locate and select the image that you will be replacing the old image with and then click open. You will notice in the bottom right hand corner that Object Preview is now displaying your new image.

    9. All set? Click Apply in the bottom right, or the changes you just made will not take effect.

PAUSE Now repeat the same process for all the other images that you will be replacing to compile your own custom skin.

After changing all images for guide.mainmenu.bar you need to repeat this process on guide.bgtitle.bar which are the backgrounds behind the title of each menu tab.

After completing this process for all the images, return here for the next step: compilation.

STEP 2: COMPILING YOUR CUSTOM SKIN

Tip: Make sure that you have replaced all the images by making sure that under Data it has a path to your image. If it is blank, no image has been specified.

    1. Goto File > Save As because now we need to save this .bar file as a .brx file so that BREW Resource Editor will allow us to compile the skin.

    2. Select a location and then name your .brx something like mainmenu_yourskin.brx Although its not mandatory, it'll just be better for organizing and sharing your skin with the world.

    3. Now that you've saved your new .bar as a .brx, BREW will allow you to compile your skin.

Goto Build > Compile Resource Script or Press F5

    4. If all goes as well, it will say Successfully built specified resource script file. Your new mainmenu_yourskin.bar file has been created at the same location that you saved the .brx file to.

PAUSE Now repeat the same entire process (steps 1 and 2) for all other .bar that you will be customizing (such as yourskin_bgtitle.bar). After completing all the customizations to the .bar files, come back here to continue onto step 3: uploading.

STEP 3: UPLOADING YOUR CUSTOM SKIN TO YOUR PHONE

For this guide we will be using:
    * Motorola Razr V3C or V3M for Verizon
    * Mini USB cable
    * BitPim [DOWNLOAD]

NOTE: You can substitute the other themes (Tropical and Business) in this guide to change the other themes already on your phone. Unfortunately, we cannot add additional skins and instead can only customize current, default ones.

Change that naughty Verizon Razr skin!

      1. Connect your phone with the mini USB cable. Keep your phone closed, as we will be replacing the main menu's of the phone. If you are browsing for instance Get It Now, there could potentially be a problem during this process while uploading the new skin.

      2. Install BitPim and then launch BitPim
In the top menu, goto View and then click View Filesystem

      3. On the left hand side, Filesystem should appear below the Play List. Click on it. Now you'll see a folder with a plus and slash symbol in the center window. Kind of looks like +[ ]/    double click it or click the plus sign

      4. This should load your phones filesystem. If you receive an error that it cant connect to your phone, simply unplug your phone and plug it back in, then click the plus sign again. Also for future notice, once you have the filesystem loaded and you experience this same error -- simply unplugging and plugging back in lets you continue what you were doing (useful for some of the following steps)

      5. After successfully loading your filesystem:
o double click the brew folder
o double click the mod folder
o single click the app_mainmenu folder

      6. In the right window, you should now see all the mainmenu_theme files. We're going to be replacing mainmenu_blue.bar -- we recommend that you save the original mainmenu_blue.bar to your computer by right mouse clicking it and selecting save. It will then download the file and ask you where you want to save it to. Select somewhere you will remember just in case you want to change it back to your original blue theme in the future.

      7. Right mouse click mainmenu_blue.bar and select overwrite... now you need to locate the custom main menu .bar file that you would like to upload to your phone. It will now start to upload 1/2 of the skin to your phone.

If you receive and error that says the files are locked or access is denied, you need to restart your phone by turning it off and then back on OR right mouse clicking in the right window pane of bitpim and selecting reboot phone.

      8. Now that you've uploaded that file, its time to upload the other 1/2 of the skin. We need to change directories, so its easiest to just click the [minus] - sign to the left of the mod folder to minimize that entire folder.

      9. now single click on the sys folder. you should be at /brew/sys/ with 8 or 9 file in the right window pane.

      10. locate blue_bgtitle.bar and backup the original blue_bgtitle.bar as described above (right mouse click > save > select location)

      11. Now that you've backed up your original file its time to upload that second 1/2 of the skin. For some reason the phone seems to lock the system files after uploading the first 1/2 of the skin. So what you need to do is right mouse click the right window pane and select reboot phone

After your phone restarts and regains a connection (you will hear 2 usb chimes, both different sounds seperated by a few seconds) you're ready to go.

      12. Right mouse click blue_bgtitle.bar and select overwrite... and then locate the custom bgtitle .bar file that you would like to upload to your phone.

      13. Now open your phone, navigate to: Menu > Settings & Tools > Display > Display Themes > Blue -- then press the CLR button to go back to the menu.

      14. SUCCESS! look at that sexyness! You've officially installed your own custom skin.
      Feels good, dont it?

Change the Startup/Shutdown SOUNDS

Great site, I've used it to completely change my Razr V3c. However, in playing and experimenting with the filesystem, I've found an easy method to change the startup and shutdown sounds that your phone plays whenever you power it on or off. I saw the guide to change the screens, but there's no guide for sounds. I don't even know if anyone knows about this yet. So I'm writing a guide in this post on how to do it. To the site ops, feel free to post this tutorial on your site after verifying it on your own phone, and tweak this howto in any way you want. Just want to help contribute to the site that's helped me out so much on my phone. And now, the guide!

For this guide we will be using:
*Motorola RAZR V3c (other models untested as of writing)
*BitPim (or other file exploring software)
*Audacity software (available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

How to change the startup.shutdown sounds

The first thing you will want to do is create an appropriate MP3 file for a startup sound, and a seperate MP3 (or copy your startup sound if you want the same sound for shutdown) for your shutdown sound. I recommend an MP3 no longer than 3 or 4 seconds, as it will cut off the ending if your chosen MP3 is too long.

You will want to use the Audacity software to make your MP3 the appropriate size. To do this install the program, load the MP3 you want to use, and than select an area of the MP3 on the sound graph you don't want to use and cut it. The few seconds of sound you want DO NOT cut out. After you are done trimming your file to a short enough time span to be fully played on your phone, save the file.

Now, start up BitPim. Navigate to /a/motorola/system. In this folder you will have multiple files, including the two we want to replace:
ui_start_up_mono.mp_ (the startup sound)
ui_start_dn_mono.mp_ (the shutdown sound)

Navigate to where you saved your new startup sound on your PC, and rename it ui_start_up_mono.mp_. Please remember that you have to change the file type from MP3 to MP_, and that by default file types are hidden in Windows XP. To make the file type viewable, open up My Computer, click on Tools in the toolbar, than Folder Options, and click the View tab. Find the box that has the words Hide Extensions for known file types, and make sure it is unchecked. Click on apply, than OK. You should now be able to change the file type from MP3 to MP_.

Now, go back to BitPim, right click on ui_start_up_mono.mp_, and click Overwrite. Navigate to where your new, renamed startup sound is, and click Open. The file should be overwritten. Now do the same for ui_start_dn_mono.mp_.

Your phone should now play your newly created Startup and Shutdown sounds. Shut down and restart the phone to verify the sounds play, and enjoy!

Changing the bottom red bar to BLACK

9-11-2008: Guide Revised to clear up some issues.

After flashing my phone back from Vivo to VZW using the 01.05.0A Monster Flash file, things didnt look the same as I had them originally and it took me a while to figure things out again with this hack. I've taken it upon myself to clear this guide up so that people who may come across it will understand it better.

First and foremost, thanks goes to GuyInLACA for figuring out this hack.

IMPORTANT

The file that is linked in this guide should NOT be used on the MAXX Ve or v9m as the screen sizes are different on those phones.

What this hack does:

By overwriting a few files with this one, we are able to change the red bar on the main screen and menu screens to a black color.

What you need:

  • Phone enabled for file transfers
  • Filesystem Exploring Software - QPST EFS explorer is recommended.
  • This file

What you do:

  1. connect the phone to the computer. LEAVE THE PHONE CLOSED!!
  2. Open your phones filesystem with QPST EFS explorer.
  3. Navigate to /brew/sys
  4. Use this file to overwrite motoblue_theme.bar on the phone - this will change the bottom bar to black in the menu when viewing the blue theme.
  5. In order to change the bottom bar to black on the main screen, use the same file, but FIRST RENAME IT to motodefault_theme.bar. If your phone already has a file by that name on the phone, go ahead and overwrite it using this renamed file. If your phone does NOT already have a file by this name, ADD it to the phone. (v3m phones).
  6. To change the bottom bar to black on the other themes (tropical and business) simply rename the file accordingly and overwrite mototropical_theme.bar and motobusiness_theme.bar.
  7. Exit your hacking application and power cycle the phone
  8. Look at that sexiness!

Notes on this hack:

This hack is fully compatible with the custom menu theme guide here. It is also fully compatible with the HTR blue bars hack/Advanced skin guide hack. As mentioned above, this hack affects the main screen and the menu screens, as well as some of the sub menu screens. All the sub screens for Contacts and Recent Calls are black. Messaging sub screens remain red. Some of the GIN sub screens are black - others are red, same for Settings and Tools. The bar color change provided by the HTR blue bars hack and the Advanced skin guide will change the bar color on the dialing screen, browser window, some of the settings and tools sub menus, and a couple other secret areas.

It has also come to my attention that on the krazr k1m phones, the (default) bar file is named differently than on the razr v3m. On the krazr phones, it is named "motodefault_themecli.bar". So you should probably overwrite THIS file instead. But then again, I'm not overly positive yet if this hack works 100% as is on that phone. If anyone would like to report success or failure, please do so by PM'ing me or use the forums which are linked below.

Taking things a bit further:

The original hack was done by GuyInLaca while he was working on skinning the Maxx Ve. The process which he related to me was to open the file in a HEX editor (such as 010 editor) and to do a search/replace for all instances of FF 00 00. He replaced those with 00 00 01. So.. if the file above does not work on your phone, you can attempt to use that method to change the color yourself. Take care to make sure you have a backup of the file incase the edit does not turn out the way that you wanted it to. If you are unfamiliar with HEX color coding, it is done in the fashion of RR GG BB with values ranging from 0-9 and a-f, two characters per color, so 00 FF 00 would be Green and 00 00 FF would be Blue. If you have a graphics editing tool such as GIMP, you can pick a color from the pallete and look at the HEX coding for that color. Keep in mind that some color combinations will not show properly on the phone.

Hack the Razr Blue Bars!

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

Although we're not all the way there yet, you can now change some of the Verizon red menu bars,as well as alot of other images and icons on your phone. Not to mention some text color changes, position of menus, windows, etc, and alot more. This guide will show you how to upload a new Blue theme to your phone that will change the verizon red bars to blue during a phone call, while dialing a number, while browsing the wireless web, and certain menu areas.

A guide is coming soon on how to make your own bars, so sit tight. Not to mention that this is part of the key to skinning the entire phone.

Also, these files can be renamed to replace the theme of Business and Tropical as well. Menu skins will not be affected by this hack.

For this guide we will be using:
* Motorola Razr V3C / V3m / KRZR for Verizon
* Your favorite filesystem explorer (bitpim or p2k commander)

How to make those red bars BLUE dammit!

Download these 3 files to your computer, somewhere you can remember. For Blue.ski, you may need to right mouse click and select Save target as... These can be renamed to be uploaded as the Business and Tropical theme as well

Blue1.dat Blue.dat Blue.ski
1.Connect your phone and start your favorite filesystem explorer (bitpim or p2k commander)

2.Find your way to a/mobile/skins/blue/ (or other skins directory if you choose to apply it to a different theme)

3.Make a backup of the original files by saving them to your computer in a folder like "backup". Did you forget? download the originals

4.Upload the 3 files to your phone in the proper directory

Please note that if you are currently set on Display Theme: Blue - that Blue1.dat may fail to upload with BitPim.

5.Now you're ready to go change your display theme to Blue, and as soon as its set, you will see the new Hack the Razr Blue Bars!

    6.Enjoy :)

Outside LCD hack that is changeable via phone interface

basically i had a realization (having learned in the past that you can change the location of the outside LCD image, aka verizon.gif, as in the specified path) that it might be possible to change the path of the lcd and do it in such a way that you could specify your outside lcd right from the phone...

well, i figured it out, and made it so that not only can you change what outside LCD you want displayed, right from the phone, but also i made it so that its all done through the microSD card... that means you can literally have hundreds if you wanted, and then basically just go into my pix and rename whichever one you want the specified LCD image to be, in my example, external.gif, reboot your phone, and wallah.

originally my idea was to use this to make it so that you could specify an outside LCD image as a picture that you have just taken with the phone.. but i think the problem with that was that the phone does not want to display .jpg's on the outside lcd, and thats the format that images taken with the camera are saved as.

but i think this is a good enough compromise :) just upload a bunch and change it whenever you want, without access to a computer...

Change your outside LCD right from your phone!
A seem edit is required, as well as a microSD card
(sorry it wont work without a microsd because the true location of those files are too long for the specified path of the outside LCD)

I'd recommend that you just load these seems from your phone, then load my pre-edited seem from file, then save to phone. You can make the edits by yourself, but it does require paying attention to the ./.a.c.t.u.l./.p.a.t.h./. and those .'s arnt just periods, they're completely blank offsets, meaning that if you click on one of the seperating .'s -- all of the bits will be turned off

The specified path of the outside LCD is located in Seem: 2771 and 2772

these pre-edited seems specify the path as /b/external.gif
(and it is case sensitive on the external.gif -- including extension)
which is any file name exactly "external.gif" located on your microSD card. if you remove your microSD card while you have one specified, it simply displays the original motorola LCD image since it cant find yours... so it doesnt break anything

http://hacktherazr.com/external/2771_0001.seem
http://hacktherazr.com/external/2772_0001.seem

Download these, open pst / msu + p2k seem editer, load seem 2771 (bytes 0000, record 1) and then load seem 2771 from file (specify the one you downloaded from here) then save to phone and repeat process for seem 2772

before you restart your phone, might as well upload a couple external LCD's to mess with, so go ahead and load a couple of these pre-set examples via bitpim or a card reader...

originals borrowed from www.motov3m.com

after uploading the new images to the card and saving the seems, make sure one of them is specified as external.gif, reboot your phone, and whalah.

to change them, its as simple as going to my pix, renaming the currently set one to like external10 (or any other name not currently in use) then rename your new choice lcd to: external -- reboot your phone, and enjoy an easily changeable outside lcd
