Dial Up Networking

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

So you live in a shack in the mountains but happen to have a laptop and a v3m or v3c but you just gotta check your email. Well as long as you have reception on your phone, you should be able to get truly wireless internet.

But what does it cost?! Nothing but minutes my friend... nothing but minutes. So yes that does mean that if its after 9 or its a saturday (free nights and weekends) then technically, its 100% free weeee! Now tell me how much you love your Razr :)

How the hell? This procedure is called tethering. With Verizon's broadband service you are able to tether using EVDO, which is significantly faster then 1x. However, the Razr is not allowed/capable of tethering via EVDO and instead only works with 1x. Actually using the v3c / v3m for internet is not even a normally possible function with these Razr's however it leaves you to wonder, why would you want to disable such a killer feature? It seems to me like its just another Razr selling point, but who cares -- on to the guide.

For some saucy wireless internet you'll need:
* Motorola Razr V3M / V3C for Verizon
* USB Cable
* A laptop or other PC
* EVDO disabled (GUIDE)

A few notes before we begin...

Verizon fixed DUN backdoor -- this thread contains a fix
* If EVDO is not disabled, this will not work
* Disable any shape or form of internet, including routers, wifi, and laptop built-in wifi
* A seem edit is required to make this work
* Being connected uses minutes only
* Arn't you excited?

Go razr internet, go razr internet, go!

    1. Make sure that EVDO is disabled! (GUIDE)

    2. Perform a seem edit that "Enables 1xRTT Settings and Service Type (QNC, Packet, Auto) - on"

Enable Dial Up Networking (DUN) WORKS
    2742 Offset 6a check bit 3

    awuhzuh?!

    Leave domain blank

    11. Click the Properties button located to the right of User name.

    13. Click the Security tab and then underneath Security Options Click Advanced (custom settings) and then Click the Settings button

    14. All of these Protocols should be selected and below it should be multiple lines with checkboxes next to them. Uncheck all of them except Unencrypted password (PAP) and then click OK and then Click Yes on the popup window about data encryption.

    15. Click OK on all of the windows until you get rid of the initial Internet Options windows.

    16. Wham! free internet at the cost of minutes (free night and weekends weeeee!)
Now to connect, Goto Start > Connect to > [whatever you named your connection]

    TROUBLESHOOTING

    "No dial-tone" or

Dial Up Networking on a PPC

If you have a Palm Pilot, Dell Axim, etc. that you want free internet on, the solution is finally here. Thanks to Trimax84 you can now have DUN on your handheld device! (Other than your RAZR)

But what does it cost?! Nothing but minutes my friend... nothing but minutes. So yes that does mean that if its after 9 or its a saturday (free nights and weekends) then technically, its 100% free weeee! Now tell me how much you love your Razr :)

    3. Another Seem Edit is required which enables access to the nvm_factory file (necessary for next step)

Enable Access to nvm_factory file WORKS
    2742 Offset 5a check bit 7

4.Download QPST here Then do this: It takes 15-20 mins or so.

    5. Pair the phone with the PDA.

    6. Make the settings look just like the ones in this guide

    Phone Number (to dial): #777

    Username: #MyNumber#@vzw3g.com

    Password: vzw

I don't have the advanced options with unencrypted passwords (PAP) and all that, but by using QPST the need for these was circumvented.

    7. Now make sure the phone is set to use the connection that you just set up! (Seems simple, right?)
I was stuck here for the longest time. My phone would go from "Packet Data" to DORMANT and sit there, so I knew it was connected but no data was being transferred.

Navigate to Settings --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks (that is for WM5 on my Axim, yours could be different).
Make sure "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" is set to the proper connection.

My said ISP but I had to change it to "My Work Network" (default name given to the bluetooth connection).

This may mess things up when trying to connect using WLAN, but just change this back and it should be fine.

    NOTES

So there it is. Free (meaning free nights and weekends since minutes are charged) internet on my Dell Axim x51v from anywhere where I have Verizon service! I hope it was easy enough to follow. Hopefully it spares other people everything I had to deal with.

Get FREE WAP

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

What do you mean WAP isn't FREE?! Well.. usually in order to access the WAP or Wireless Web you need to call Verizon's customer service and pay a monthly fee for WAP access. If you have a messaging package though, often times wireless WAP is included. However, regardless, you will still be using minutes -- whether or not you use this FREE WAP modification or not.

What this modification does is changes the proxy that you use to actually access the WAP. When you use Verizon's proxy, which is default, you get charged for minutes usage AND for actual transfer of data (uploading/downloading). So in essence, by changing the proxy, you avoid paying the extra fee's for anything and everything you see on the WAP.

Also, it has been reported that using this FREE WAP modification also means that you -dont- have to sign up for access to the wireless web... thats right... that means that is only uses minutes... no monthly fee, no data charges, just minutes. And yes, that means that FREE nights and weekends means absolutely FREE WAP.

NEW! Now featuring the Official Hack the Razr FREE WAP proxy.
We here at hacktherazr.com have purchased a completely seperate server to host our very own public, FREE WAP proxy. All you have to do is register for an account at our forum, and our system will automatically create your own, personal, completely safe and secure, WAP account with your forum name and password as the WAP proxy username and password. This will allow you to actually save sessions and cookies so that you can have a site remember your login and then automatically log you (and only you) back into that gmail account for instance. Oh, and did we mention its free?

This site is visitor supported and we appreciate any and all donations. Every donations goes directly towards paying for the actual FREE WAP server itself, as we do have a completely seperate dedicated server setup for the sole purpose of FREE WAP :) If you would like to make a donation you could either click the make a donation link below, or you could click on some advertisement's on the site that you are genuinely interested in, as that helps us pay for the server as well. Thanks!

For this guide we will be using:
* Motorola Razr V3C / V3M for Verizon
* Programming Menu & "Web Sessions"
* The Official HTR FREE WAP Proxy!
* For newer Razr's you may need to do this seem edit:
Enable websessions= seem 2742, record 1, bytes 0000, offset 0018 bit 5

How to get FREE WAP, the easy way

*** REQUIRED FOR NEW RAZRS FROM VERIZON
Razrs with the latest firmware from Verizon, or rather recently purchased Razrs, came with a new firmware that disable the WEB SESSION menu that is REQUIRED to use this guide. You MUST perform this seem edit in order to show the web session that is needed to get this hack to work.

    REQUIRED SEEM EDIT - Enable websessions= seem 2742, record 1, bytes 0000, offset 0018 bit 5

    1. Open your phone. Press #0SETUP* or #073887* -- QUICKLY -- If you pause while typing #0SETUP* in, it may not work. Also note that thats a ZERO [0] not an OH [O]

    2. "Enter Security Code:" should be on the screen - type 000000 which is SIX [6] ZERO's [000000] and then Press the right soft-key which is the top-right button, closest to the screen.

    3. Web sessions should be the first item in the list, and should be highlighted. Press the right soft-key for Select

    4. Scroll down to highlight [New Entry] and then press Select

    5. Here we will setup the new web session to in essence give us FREE WAP. Please note that all the entries you will be making can be done by first highlighting the field you want to change, and then simply begin typing your entry. You do not have to press anything to begin editing, but if you choose to, you can press the center main menu button.

    6. You must have previously registered at our Forum to have your own WAP account.
To set up a wap / forum account, please register here
If you have forgotten your password, click to retrieve your password

Name: Htr       [Here you can name the websession whatever you want]
Homepage: http://homepage       [Un-changeable, but our proxy automatically sends you to wap.hacktherazr.com]
User ID: forum-Name       [Enter your forum username exactly as you have it, this is case sensitive]
Password: YoUr-PaSSworD       [Enter your forum password exactly as you have it, this is case sensitive]
Gateway IP 1: 000.000.000.000       [You do not need to change this]
Gateway 1: wap.hacktherazr.com       [Primary FREE WAP server gateway address]
Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this, the FREE WAP server is setup on port 9201]
E2E Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this]
LXL Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this]
Gateway 2: hacktherazr.com       [OPTIONAL Secondary FREE WAP server gateway address]
Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this, the FREE WAP server is setup on port 9201]
E2E Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this]
LXL Port 1: 9201       [You do not need to change this]

    7. Now click Done and you're almost there!

    8. Highlight your new websession and then press the center main menu button.
You should now find yourself happily connecting to the official HTR FREE WAP proxy, with your very own WAP account. If you have any problems, please continue reading.

Also note that if you want to setup multiple proxies and easily switch to a different web session, then press ##BROWSER (##2769737) to go directly to the web session menu. You cannot alter the username/password/port through this method.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

For Wireless Internet Services, please dial *611.
We are unsure why this happens, but it does sometimes, and the usual easy fix for it is to go back into the Web Sessions menu, select, activate, and actually use the REAL verizon wap proxy. Verify that you are able to connect with that. Then, open up Web Sessions and switch back to the HTR FREE WAP proxy, and it should work.

    "Network Connection Lost" message
The server does restart every 60 minutes so that we can prevent the server from crashing and staying offline for extend periods of time. If you are actively browsing the WAP while our server restarts, you will get a "Network connection lost" message for about 10 seconds and then everything will go back to normal and you can continue right where you left off.

    "Authentication failed"
Make sure that when you were entering your forum password into the websession that the first letter was NOT capital. Sometimes the razr, by default, makes the first letter of inputed passwords Capital. One method is inputing the same Lletter twice and then going back and deleting that letter.

Also, sometimes if your password is too long or has funky characters in it, it might cause you to get locked out of the system. Simply try and change your password to something simpler and/or shorter just to test and see if that is the issue.

Hello from linux and dun

So I finally, after multiple different days of searching and trying, got my v3m, that's flashed to Alltel, to connect and dial up from linux (Ubuntu 7.10 specifically).

First off EVDO disabled like usual. And also you need the no pap thing that would let you use dun from a palm pilot or what not. This is because the dialing program ppp in linux does not let you specify security options and such as you can do with the winders dialer.

So follow this guide up to and including #4 http://www.hacktherazr.com/guides/verizon.dun.ppc.php.

This next part is modified from: http://www.blackberryforums.com/linux-users-corner/101715-how-verizon-8703e-usb-tethered-linux-ubuntu-7-10-a.html.

At the terminal type: tail -f /var/log/messages
Then plug your phone into your computer, you should see something like this:

Apr 8 00:19:49 Kevin-server kernel: [910921.674934] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Apr 8 00:19:49 Kevin-server kernel: [910921.677897] cdc_acm 1-1:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

We are looking for the ttyACM0 part telling you how to access your phone from linux.

Do a ctrl+c then type: sudo gedit /etc/ppp/peers/1xdun
Feel free to replace gedit with your favorite text editor especially if you are not using gnome.

Now paste into this new blank file:

debug debug debug
nodetach
/dev/*the tty part we found earlier or what ever it was*
115200
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/chatscripts/1xdun"
nomultilink
defaultroute
noipdefault
ipcp-restart 7
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
# added this, so that it doesn't disconnect after few mn of innactivity
lcp-echo-interval 0
lcp-echo-failure 999
modem
noauth
nocrtscts
noipdefault
novj # refused anyway, no point in trying every time
usepeerdns
user *yournumber*@vzw3g.com
password vzw

Replacing the things inside of *'s and then save and close.

Next type: sudo gedit /etc/chatscripts/1xdun
Again replace gedit if you want/need.

And paste into the new file:

ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'NO DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER' ABORT DELAYED ABORT ERROR
SAY "Initializing\n"
'' ATZ
OK-AT-OK ATDT#777
CONNECT \d\c

Note that everything from ABORT until before SAY should be on one line, and then save and close.

Now you should be able to type: sudo pppd call 1xdun
If you open a second terminal and type: ifconfig ppp and then see something like:

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:70.193.249.184 P-t-P:66.174.201.6 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:105 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:126 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
          RX bytes:39774 (38.8 KB) TX bytes:22668 (22.1 KB)

If you do then you should be golden and be able to surf. If not, post back here with the output after running the pppd call 1xdun command. Also I will try to help out with any questions and stuff relating to this as best I can, so feel free.

P.S.

How to disable EVDO for a Verizon V3C / V3M

This section relates to the Razr Phones provided by Verizon Wireless only.

If you live in an area where your phone constantly switches back and forth between EVDO and 1X then its possible that it is draining the battery of your V3C faster then normal. Disabling EVDO on your Razr in this scenaro has been reported to indeed improve battery life. However, disabling EVDO on your phone renders you temporarily unable to view vCast. Temporarily because you can (with learning the routine) easily disable and enable EVDO at any time. The following is a guide on how to do, just that.

For this guide we will be using: * Motorola Razr V3C / V3M for Verizon * Programming Menu & test mode

How to disable EVDO for a Verizon V3C / V3M
    1. Open your phone. Press ##DEBUG aka ##33284 -- QUICKLY -- which is how you activate test mode, so that we can essentially disable EVDO

Also take note that pressing ##DEBUG is how you DISABLE test mode as well. If you do not disable test mode, you will get the FTS screen at boot up and when you accidently do a CLR left soft-key.
    2. If you notice that the number 4 didnt get entered, thats a good thing, and means that when you pressed the 4 that TEST MODE was activated.

If you see the last 4 entered in ##DEBUG aka ##33284 then you need to press end to clear the screen and type ##DEBUG again
    3. Now press the CLR button then the top left soft key. It should now display a full white screen that says FTS at the top.

If it doesnt have a white background and say FTS, then press END and try CLR then left soft key one more time. If it still doesnt work, you need to press ##DEBUG again to activate test mode
    4. Press the right soft-key key *3 TIMES* or until you see at the top "ServOpt: NoChg" - "AudioOpt: Auto"
    5. Press the down key *8 TIMES* or until your see a > next to HDR Pref like so -- >HDR Pref: Auto
Being set to auto means that the phone is looking for both EVDO and 1x reception, and that it will automatically choose EVDO over 1x, should EVDO coverage be available
    6. Press the right soft-key TWICE labeled CHANGE or until it says >HDR Pref: cdma
This is telling the phone to disregard EVDO coverage and simply look for and connect to 1x coverage.
There is no significant difference in the strength of reception when forcing your phone to look for 1x coverage. You will receive same, if not better reception, in areas where an EVDO connection is weak and essentially giving you poor coverage and poor battery life.
    7. Press the left soft-key ONCE labeled EXIT and it will flash white real quick, then appear to be frozen...
    8. Your phone is resetting. You will not be able to press for NEXT or PREV. You have to wait about 5-10 seconds until you CAN press the right or left soft-key for NEXT or PREV. The screens may cycle a couple different screens indicating that its ready.
    9. Press the CLR button and then press the left soft-key to get out of the programming menu.
    10. EVDO is officially disabled and capable of being re-enabled. However, test mode is still running in the background and we need to turn it off. We will go back to the programming menu.
    11. Press ##DEBUG or #33284 -- QUICKLY -- to disable test mode, make sure you do this, or you will get the white FTS screen.
    12. All Done! weeeeee! now you should experience longer battery life which makes everybody happy. Also notice that this process is easy enough to remember and do at any time. You can quickly re-enable EVDO to get faster WAP speeds and to use get it now and vcast... its all just a test mode away :)
