some blackberries are
Posted: Thu, 12/04/2008 - 12:52 by listenman20some blackberries are different....i just read a post at a BB site that said they got a storm from VZW and unlocked it to use on ATT and Tmobile had the pics posted to prove it...so if it's possible i'm certain the answer is out there just do a google search for BB cdma and gsm. might include your model # to reduce search results...i assume if it's a world phone then it's possible.
The Storm is a bit different
Posted: Thu, 12/04/2008 - 13:16 by pyde_pypperThe Storm is a bit different because if memory serves me it is the first BB device VZW has that was setup to be used as a world phone ( ie has a SIM card slot). However trying to take a SIM based BB and getting it to work on a CDMA network won't work because the phone will not have the firmware to take the internal programming required for use on a CDMA network because CDMA phones do not us SIM cards. I could be totally off but it's very highly unlikely you'll get a GSM model phone working on a CDMA network.

it is a blackberry pearl,
Posted: Thu, 12/04/2008 - 13:30 by Telcarit is a blackberry pearl, but lets say this that you have SD Memory card slot on you computer and you dont have the drivers for it then the computer want realy even know its there, so if you I was to flash my phone to firmware that has know idea what a cim card is then it shoudent bother with it, I would think.
Just wondering here. Why

Why would a GSM phone have CDMA as a alternative? I mean I can get why a CDMA phone would have the ability to double as a GSM phone for travel to other countries that don't use CDMA, but doesn't the whole world use GSM? So wouldn't you just want your GSM phone to support the bands that the other countries have?
I was also under the impression that a world phone from vzw wouldn't work with our GSM network, that the bands the phone supported would be for the other GSM bands.

For one not all countries use GSM. there are place in the world that are CDMA or WCDMA.
As for a GSM band keep in mind some of the newer GSM phones are multi band so they can be used in any country. You are correct the GSM band used in the US is not the same so other parts of the world but if the phone was designed to use any one of the GSM bands then it would still work here. Heck don't go to Japan they have there own band they use. My father travel the world all the time and even his high end AT&T phone will not work in Japan. If I'm not mistaken he said that is the only country in the world you have to have a specifc band to work on.

I didn't know there were
Posted: Thu, 12/04/2008 - 14:08 by SailorcancerI didn't know there were places that user pure CDMA. I'll have to search around to see who they are. I always thought that every places in the world supported GSM, and then there would always be CDMA or the WCDMA which I still don't get lol.
Why doesn't that surprise me about Japan? Then again their cell phones do pretty much everything lol. So when your Dad goes Japan does he rent a phone from his provider or does he own one?

His department has a few phones that work overseas so when people travel they just take one of those. I did talk to him last night and asked, the reality is the phone must be 3G to work in Japan. So like if you owned the new iPhone it would work being its 3G, and there is like 2 other phones AT&T has that work also.
FYI the US uses the 850 & 1900 Mhz band for GSM, overseas they use the 900 & 1800 Mhz band, and some use the WCDMA 2100 Mhz band.
For CDMA in the states it's CDMA 850 or 1900 Mhz.
This past week I was in the VZW store and was toying with the BB Storm, now that phones covers all bands CDMA 850/1900, quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900Mhz and even the 2100Mhz WCDMA band. I didn't talk to anyone about it but that phone would pretty much work just about anywhere in the world no questions asked I would think being it covers every cell band that is used today no matter what country you are in.
