Posted: Thu, 05/29/2008 - 16:08 by gooberdudeYou need to get the sprint developer application to test the Java app. While you are there add your ESN to have the Developer Cert enabled on your phone... it is optional but there are apps that may require it to run. Gmaps for example.
There are a lot of apps out there and they may be written to work for certain phones. If the Sprint Java emulater tests the apps functions without error, you can use QPST to get into the phones file system. Once you verify the applications numbering. You will need to rename the jar and jad file names to be the next available number not being used. Transfer the files and restart the phone.
Now for the fun stuff... The JAD file has information that the phone needs to read for loading the Java app. If the JAD file is missing some information, you may need to edit it in a txt editor and fix the invalid Jar name and possibly change the id so that all your games will load into the games folder. This is only needed if you want to keep things clean. Remember that the application may be placed in any one of the folders if not edited.
A good thing to do is to look at the Jad files of each Jar... this will allow you to copy the Jad and edit it to run a jar you want to load. As for some JAR files do not have a JAD file. There is a utility to create JAD files but you must rename it the number that you want to use before copying to phone.
I have applications for various phones working on my Sprint phone but I had to learn from expermentation with JAD files and what Nokia, Samsung and Motorola phones are compatible with Sprint Java. It is best to get your phone to the latest F/W since it does clean up some of the Java issues experianced with compatibility.

Posted: Thu, 05/29/2008 - 22:35 by wildpig1234Is installing the apps as simple as just copying the .jad and .jar to /motorola/shared/jas/temp/install and then reset the phone? i tried that and the phone never start the installation after i reset.
with regard to putting the .jar and .jad into /motorola/shared/jas/content, I did that also and i also tried putting an edited txt file in /brew/mod/obione/jas/index to no avail.
Much appreciated if you can send me a txt, jar, jad file that you actually got working. Much appreciated also if you can go into a little more details of what to look out for to make sure this works. thanks.

Posted: Fri, 05/30/2008 - 18:21 by gooberdudeHi, I would post edited JAD files along with the applications to be used on Sprint V3m phones. but I don't have an account with any sites that hold files for download. What you can do is copy a JAD or two from your phone and compare them. You'll learn just as much as with any file I could give you. If you rename both the Jad and Jar files to a number not used and copy them back to the same folder you got the originals from you will see for your self what works and what does not when you test. Though you will see two identical applications unless you change the id for assignment in the Java applications folders.
If someone here could allow me to place a small mount of files for you to install or test with.

installing java apps to v3m or v9m ????
Posted: Sat, 05/31/2008 - 14:59 by wildpig1234I finally found a way to install java programs on my sprint v9m without having to use data service. It seems to work most of the time. I got 12/14 apps downloaded from getjar installed.
1. First thing is making sure bitpim works. Go to setting and choose v3cm for phone type. (hopefully the next ver will have official support for v9m, but this works great for now). Then browse the com port and choose one which is named as usb modem. Of course you have to have all of motorola device driver already installed and working....
2. Use bitpim to go to /motorola/shared/jas/content/ and look for an unused jar/jad file #. make a note of that.
3. Then rename your 3rd party jar/jad to that #.jar/.jad.
4. Use a txt editor to add this line Content-Folder: Games or Content-Folder: Applications to the jad file and save.
5. Then use bitpim to transfer the jad/jar files to /motorola/shared/jas/temp/install.
6. Then reboot the phone. After it's turn on and go through the boot screen, you should then see a gray screen with "please wait" lasting for a few seconds, indicating that it's installing. (wait for about 30 sec for the screen to come up, sometimes it doesn't come up immediately, but should within 30 sec after the boot up screen). Then go to the app or game menu to confirm your new games or apps is installed. If you don't see this "please wait" screen, then it didn't install.
Like I say i got several but not all jar/jad installed. Let me know what you think. Hopefully someone can improve on this? ;).
This instruction is specific for sprint v9m. I think this part of the directory structure on v3m is also the same. I will try this on my old v3m later....
I have run across several posted instruction on this but no one specifically noted that you need to have this line added to the jad file: Content-Folder: Games or Content-Folder: Applications. I think that was the problem for me earlier.....
