Change the Startup/Shutdown SOUNDS
Great site, I've used it to completely change my Razr V3c. However, in playing and experimenting with the filesystem, I've found an easy method to change the startup and shutdown sounds that your phone plays whenever you power it on or off. I saw the guide to change the screens, but there's no guide for sounds. I don't even know if anyone knows about this yet. So I'm writing a guide in this post on how to do it. To the site ops, feel free to post this tutorial on your site after verifying it on your own phone, and tweak this howto in any way you want. Just want to help contribute to the site that's helped me out so much on my phone. And now, the guide!
For this guide we will be using:
*Motorola RAZR V3c (other models untested as of writing)
*BitPim (or other file exploring software)
*Audacity software (available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
How to change the startup.shutdown sounds
The first thing you will want to do is create an appropriate MP3 file for a startup sound, and a seperate MP3 (or copy your startup sound if you want the same sound for shutdown) for your shutdown sound. I recommend an MP3 no longer than 3 or 4 seconds, as it will cut off the ending if your chosen MP3 is too long.
You will want to use the Audacity software to make your MP3 the appropriate size. To do this install the program, load the MP3 you want to use, and than select an area of the MP3 on the sound graph you don't want to use and cut it. The few seconds of sound you want DO NOT cut out. After you are done trimming your file to a short enough time span to be fully played on your phone, save the file.
Now, start up BitPim. Navigate to /a/motorola/system. In this folder you will have multiple files, including the two we want to replace:
ui_start_up_mono.mp_ (the startup sound)
ui_start_dn_mono.mp_ (the shutdown sound)
Navigate to where you saved your new startup sound on your PC, and rename it ui_start_up_mono.mp_. Please remember that you have to change the file type from MP3 to MP_, and that by default file types are hidden in Windows XP. To make the file type viewable, open up My Computer, click on Tools in the toolbar, than Folder Options, and click the View tab. Find the box that has the words Hide Extensions for known file types, and make sure it is unchecked. Click on apply, than OK. You should now be able to change the file type from MP3 to MP_.
Now, go back to BitPim, right click on ui_start_up_mono.mp_, and click Overwrite. Navigate to where your new, renamed startup sound is, and click Open. The file should be overwritten. Now do the same for ui_start_dn_mono.mp_.
Your phone should now play your newly created Startup and Shutdown sounds. Shut down and restart the phone to verify the sounds play, and enjoy!

New hack I found, change the Startup/Shutdown SOUNDS
Posted: Sat, 02/03/2007 - 14:56 by CincyballNice write up, but this is one of the older well known hacks for the razr. Sorry to rain on your parade ;)
But one question, the /motorola/shared/audio folder is locked by the provider. What model razr and firmware are u running, and what version of BitPim are u running.
Also, with BitPim, you dont need to rename the file if you are overwriting. You can leave it as .mp3 and all is well.

Reflashed firmware is named VRZ_V3c_01.15.04P_FLEX_23_1P_PRIhh97184_CUSTOMER_UPGRADE_ftp_off.shx
BitPim version is 0.9.10

Posted: Fri, 06/27/2008 - 18:57 by spikejonesI actually think there's a guide for that already up here somewhere to tell the truth. I did that one months ago to change my startup sound to a techno beat and I used the HTR premade "Hacked" gif for the startup animation.
This one:

edit:
maybe there isn't, perhaps I did what you did and just figured it out on my own when I realized that the images could be changed. it only makes sense that the same thing could be done with the sounds as well.
ehh. whats up doc?

Otherwise very nice write up, when I get a chance I may have to try this on my Vivo flashed phone.
Thanx!
Also a VZW V3m flashed to USCC NCR_01.1B.00R, then upgraded via MSU and now flashed to ViVo and active on the USCC network.

Posted: Tue, 07/01/2008 - 07:49 by great_dameAnyone have the link to changing boot/shutdown sounds? I never got around to doing that and I wanna give it a try.
Additionally, anyone have any cool pre-made sounds for this that are already the appropriate length, etc?
