I just got an H500 BT headset. It's working fine, but the default ringtone is hideous. It's a cheesy version of one of the world's worst pieces of music -- Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" (apologies to any Wagner fans out there, but this is just torture for me).
I wrote to Motorola Tech Support and they said this ringtone is programmed into the phone and can't be changed.
Well, sure, unless you have HTR around to help you!
Does anyone know where the file resides on the phone? I'm thinking I can use Bitpim to overwrite it, if only I can find the right file. I've got the VZW interface still... and not sure yet whether I want to flash to Alltell. I've made lots of mods, and I'm okay with the phone now, except for this last problem.
They said it was programmed in the phone? I'd imagine it was programmed in the headset. I mean... do you think it would ring differently when paired with a different phone? I would have thought the headset carried the tone and was the same with all phones (showing that the tone was in the headset).
hmmm... jah interesting... it could be contained within the actual headset, or it could be particular the phone... just require some testing i suppose. but if it were in the phone, i would imagine it would be similar to one of the tones like for low battery, keytones, etc
I'd be really surprised to hear it's in the phone. I have an H300 and my phone rings outloud when I get a call, plus I hear a little ringtone out of the earpiece, which is what makes me think it's part of the headset, cause it happens along with my regular ringtone.
It's the headset. I had the same one linked to my RAZR and it played that stupid song everytime someone called. I have since replaced it with another Moto model headset, and all it does is beep when someone calls.
Well, the Wagner ringtone does play in the headset -- my phone is still playing the ringtone I selected.
However, Motorola Tech Support stated that the ringtone is being sent to the headset by the phone.
Now, I'm not sure that Motorola Tech Support know what they're talking about, but still... Since there's no way for us to program the headset itself, let's assume they're correct. Maybe the handset identifies the headset as an H500 and streams a pre-set ringtone to it. If that's the case, we might be able to find a way to change it.
The problem is, no-one seems to know how to change it. I've searched other sites and come up with pretty much the same answer -- "can't be done, learn to live with it". If there is a seem or a file to edit, it's so well buried that no-one in the moto modding community has found it yet. Even in the gain tables, there doesn't seem to be a way to just turn the headset ringtone off.
I'm open to any thoughts about where to look to mod this.
I'm not about to go buy a new headset right now just because of the objectionable ringtone... but I just can't imagine who thought this was a good idea.
I'm with those who say it's in the head set. It just seems like a simple midi embedded in the programing of the headset. The thing to do it to get the USB cable for it and try to see if you can access it. I was gonna try it once I get a cable.

Interesting proposition. I have the cable, but what would you use to get into the headset's programming?
I'd bet on it being in the headset. It's very unlikely the phone sends the info. If that's the case, the phone would be carrying info on what tone to send to all kinds of headsets, which would be a huge waste of space.
The fact that the headset has a USB connection at all is very promising, and I'll bet it's totally possible to change that file that way (although how, I have no clue).
It IS in the headset. I had 2 different headsets one for work and one for personal phones. The H500 played FOV, but the Scala 500 played something else. I had both headsets paired with both phones. I lost the scala so I can't tell you what the song was.
Online and operating normally To use the server you must enable WAP access on your account by going into the My account link on the side bar, going to Edit, then go to WAP, and then check the WAP access enable box and Submit.
